Celebrating Black History at Rightmove has been a focus for all of us, during the month of October. It’s an opportunity to put a spotlight on all the wonderful and diverse cultures and traditions we have within the Black community, in the UK. The theme for Black History Month this year is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ which focuses on how we can celebrate and reflect on our own individual stories and identities as Black people in the UK.

Reclaiming the narrative and having pride in our identities is important, now more than ever, in our lives and at work. This year, Rightmove has supported activities celebrating Black History and launched resources which are accessible to all colleagues, year-round. Rightmove is committed to championing diversity and will continue with initiatives beyond the month of October.

I spoke to Black Rightmovers about empowerment, the theme for this year’s Black History Month, and asked how Rightmove can support them while providing a space for all to continue to learn.

What ‘Reclaiming Narratives’ means to some of our Rightmovers

Reclaiming my story has given me the confidence to navigate spaces where I might be the only POC in the room and to use my voice to share perspectives that might not otherwise be heard.

– Henrietta Okonta, Talent Acquisition Partner

To me, reclaiming a narrative is challenging cultural portrayals and social perceptions. It’s an invitation to critically examine the stories I’ve been told and, equally, the stories I have the power to share with others. Whilst I think we should all look to learn about cultural differences beyond allocated months/days – Black History Month provides a platform to ‘reclaim the narrative’ by taking a wider lens to narrow historic views. It provides an opportunity to talk about the struggles, triumphs and celebrations of black individuals throughout the years. Personally, Black History Month is a time for reflection. It’s also a time to celebrate our stories with integrity and pride. It’s a powerful reminder that every narrative reclaimed is a step toward a more honest and inclusive understanding of a shared history.

– Gabriel Johnson, Talent Acquisition Partner

Hearing stories from diverse voices within the Black community really broadens my appreciation for the diversity of experiences in our community and deepens my understanding of what belonging means. As a Black African, it offers a perspective which feels a bit different from my own. Professionally, while I had a Master’s degree, I didn’t always feel ready for certain roles—not because of my background, but because I recognised the importance of understanding this new society. I wanted to contribute meaningfully by learning the nuances of this environment.

–  Lawrence Mburu, Service Designer

Empowering experiences

A moment I felt empowered to reclaim my narrative was during my time at a predominantly white school in a largely white area. Growing up, I often felt pressured to conform or downplay parts of my identity. Eventually, I decided to embrace my background and share my experiences more openly, using opportunities to educate others and challenge stereotypes. This shift allowed me to take ownership of my story and express my identity with pride.

–  Henrietta Okonta, Talent Acquisition Partner

A way that I have reclaimed my narrative is my attitude towards my hair. Previously, I would spend a lot of time trying to make sure a single strand of hair wasn’t out of place or, use straightening treatments so that it didn’t look ‘messy’, making sure I was presentable to others when I left the house. Now, I wear my hair in its natural state and am proud of it!

– Imogen Myrie, Customer Care Specialist

On how Rightmove can continue to uplift black voices all year around

Rightmove can continue to support Black narratives by creating platforms for Black employees to share their stories and experiences throughout the year, not just during BHM. Rightmove can also Partner with Black-owned businesses and invest in mentorship programmes.

–  Henrietta Okonta, Talent Acquisition Partner

Take time to get to know employees of colour or, from diverse backgrounds. Understand their stories, motivations and aspirations. Take time to recognise traditions or days of celebration and to think about how we can spotlight these days across our office, and across all teams.
I think what they are doing to celebrate BHM is great, I’d like to see activities take place more regularly, say, every quarter or every 6 months.

–  Gabriel Johnson, Talent Acquisition Partner

Celebrating through food

Food was at the heart of our Black History Month celebration at Rightmove. We honoured culture through cuisine, indulging in the vibrant flavours of Ethiopia and showcasing the richness of St. Lucian food and culture. It was a celebration of connection and heritage, savoured in every bite!
